EARLY START, QUICK START: HUNGATE LEADS THE PACK

Professionals came out firing on the opening day of the 2005 TaylorMade Invitational. The result? The leader board is scattered with familiar names, but the top position belongs to Kokomo (Indiana) Country Club's Cary Hungate. A veteran of all five TaylorMade Invitationals played in Puerto Vallarta, Hungate shot the day's low round of 65, seven under par on the Nicklaus course, after teeing off on the 10th hole.

Hitting 17 of 18 greens in regulation enabled Hungate to rack up nine birdies, including three to start the round on Nos. 10, 11 and 12, and a near-ace on No. 6. The only blemish in his near-perfect round was a double bogey at 16. Hungate credited his new TaylorMade TP wedges for helping him get close for his many birdie attempts.

Past champion Kyle Flinton and Ryan Helminen are tied for second place at five under par with defending champion Jimmy Letourneau close behind at four under. Flinton acknowledged a bit of difficulty reading the Bermuda greens after turning in his score card which revealed two three-putts, but finished strong on his last three holes, birdieing Nos. 7, 8 and 9 on the Weiskopf course. Helminen also started play with a solid performance on the Weiskopf course making birdies on Nos. 4, 5, 7, 10 and 17.

The par-3 seventh hole on the Weiskopf course proved easier for some of the amateurs on Wednesday than it did the professionals. Jim O¹Hara and Brian Sherman, both first-year amateur participants at the TaylorMade Invitational, aced the 164-yard hole.

TEAM DYNAMICS: A BALANCED FOUNDATION

Although TaylorMade Invitational professionals and amateurs walk a tightrope of emotions at the challenging Nicklaus and Weiskopf courses of Vista Vallarta, several teams made it through the first round with impeccable balance.

The Weiskopf layout proved to be the shotmaker¹s course Wednesday as eight of the top 10 teams teed it up there at Vista Vallarta Club de Golf.

Jordan Young of Trenton, Michigan, and his team of amateurs (John Hancock, Ray Milne and Marty Scott) shot the first-round low score of 121, led by Young¹s three-under-par 69. Defending team champion, Team Letourneau, is three strokes off the lead and with 54 holes left to play, you can bet that foursome won¹t give up the title without a fight. John O¹Leary¹s team is five back and four more teams‹led by Devin Hillman, David Quinn, Kyle Flinton and Jim Woodward are well within hailing distance at 127.
