HUNGATE HOLDS ON FLINTON, LETOURNEAU LINGER

The courses changed for the players Thursday but the story remains almost the same: Cary Hungate holds a share of the top spot on the leader board and the tricky Bermuda greens continue to wreak havoc on the scorecards.

Hungate's one-under-par total on the Nicklaus course, though, wasn't enough to keep him alone atop the pack. He has been joined by three-time TaylorMade Invitational veteran Craig Lindsey, professional at Madison Golf Club (Madison, N.J.), who shot a second-round 65 to bring him from one to eight under par. Lindsey, who grew up playing golf in Florida on Bermuda greens, enjoys the courses here at the Vista Vallarta Club de Golf. "It was an easy round for me," he said. " I only missed two greens and birdied four straight holes Nos. 6, 7, 8 and 9. I'm really happy being this far under par."

Hungate's round on the Weiskopf course featured more of the sharp shooting he started with yesterday. He again hit 17 of 18 greens in regulation and is still without a three-putt. But today's round wasnąt as easy as the first. A bad lie in the fairway bunker on the sixth hole led to a double bogey, but the team continued to play well.

The veteran knows the experienced field will come knocking on his door. Sitting just a stroke behind him and co-leader Lindsey is a fellow Hoosier, pro Todd Smith, who shot a 69 to inch closer to the top. "Todd's very solid," said Hungate. "He'll be tough to beat down the stretch."

Seasoned veterans Jimmy Letourneau and Kyle Flinton head into round three just two strokes off the lead. While both struggled more with the Nicklaus course on Thursday than they did with the Weiskopf course in the first round, the comfort level with consecutive rounds on Nicklaus could lead to a surge by both players.

TEAM PLAY HEATS UP A SCRAMBLE FOR THE TOP

A new team leader emerged Thursday in the TaylorMade Invitational, but it can't afford to relax. A dozen other teams lie within striking distance of 10 strokes or less and are poised to make a move in the closing rounds.

vThe squad assembled by professional Jim 'Woody' Woodward (Oklahoma City, Okla.) of Ed Evans, Doug Stephens and Terry Wilkerson shot a 122 on the Weiskopf course for the low round of the day. Woodward's solid 69 set the tone for a team that mixes solid shot planning and execution with humor when approaching the game.

"We have a good chemistry," he said. "We have two 13s and a 14 handicap, and me as a gross player, so as long as I donąt screw up too bad, we'll be OK." Woodward believes that the Weiskopf layout is a bit more forgiving for the higher handicappers, but that the greens are difficult on both courses. "I donąt like these greens at all," he said. "They're very grainy and very difficult to putt, but everybody in the field has to fight it. We hit some putts and said to ourselves, 'Did that go which way I thought it did?' But we're still having fun."

Veteran teams with substantial tournament experience led by professionals Letourneau, Flinton and Bruce Soulsby are just a few strokes off the lead. With 36 holes left, this event is far from over.

A SPECIAL OCCASION MADE MORE SPECIAL FOR JIM FLICK

The guest of honor at last nightąs Pairings Party, Jim Flick, left the hotel lobby with more than lasting memories. He probably anticipated his annual TaylorMade Invitational birthday wishes (he turned 76 yesterday), but even the analytical swing guru couldnąt have guessed what was to follow.

Mark King, TaylorMade's President and CEO, announced that the new trophy created for the tournament would be dedicated in Flick's name, and then presented the famed instructor with the plaque that will be affixed to the trophy. "This is a special day for a special man who has done more for more people in golf than anyone I know," said King.

The striking bronze trophy is the creation of Hector Manuel, a Puerto Vallarta sculptor who started conceptualizing the award three years ago. Since last February, he worked on three or four models before the final design was chosen. The trophy, which weighs 200 pounds, features a top with Manuel's interpretation of the distinctive TaylorMade Invitational logo. The sculptor will soon create a three-meter-tall bronze angel for the town to replace a stone angel statue that was destroyed in a hurricane.
