Todd Smith, a three-year TaylorMade pro who trailed Thursday’s co-leaders Cary Hungate and Craig Lindsey by just one stroke, pushed his way to the top of the leader board with his second-straight three-under-par performance to bring his total to 10 under. “I hit the ball really well today, better than the first two days,” Smith said. “I had a little trouble getting a putt to drop on the first 13 holes, but made a couple coming down the stretch, so I feel good.” Smith credits his father—one of his teammates—for helping to keep him focused. One stroke separates Smith from fellow Indiana golf professional Hungate and Thursday’s big mover, Bruce Soulsby. The tricky Bermuda greens on the Nicklaus course gave Hungate a particularly difficult time Friday. Two three-putts hampered his attempt to pull ahead of the field. Soulsby, who originally came to the U.S. from New Zealand after making stops on the Asian and European tours plus a three-year stint on the PGA Tour, shot a 65 on the Weiskopf course to bring him all the way from two under par to nine under. Soulsby picked up two strokes with one swing of his 7-iron on the Weiskopf par-3 13th hole, where he knocked it in for a hole-in-one. Having seen the finer aspects of golf throughout the years, Soulsby rates this tournament at the top of his list: “This is a credit to TaylorMade. The food, parties, entertainment and the way they treat everyone from start to finish is first-class.” Heading into the final round, expect frequent changes on the leader board. Most of the top players will be competing on the Weiskopf course, where traditionally it has been easier to score. Eleven players are within four strokes of the leader, including defending champion Jimmy Letourneau and yesterday’s co-leader Craig Lindsey. Both are just two strokes behind Smith. WINDS OF CHANGE The leader board in the team competition continues to change each day like the afternoon breezes that blow across Vista Villarta. Team Soulsby moved into first place on the strength of its captain’s round and was joined by the team assembled by professional Eddie Luke. Yesterday’s leader, Team Woodward, dropped into second place along with Team Hungate. Both teams, though, are just three strokes back. Players led by Dick Smith Jr. and David Quinn also are well within range, at four and five shots back, respectively. Saturday’s action will be hotter than the pavement of Vista Vallarta’s cart paths.
