2006 RESULTS - ROUND 2, NOVEMBER 16
Leading The Pack: Carpenter Dismantles Nicklaus Course
Tom Carpenter confidently followed his own blueprint for success on the Nicklaus course in the third round of the 2006 TaylorMade Invitational, firing a 9-under-par 63 to overtake and pass two-time champion Jimmy Letourneau by four strokes. The 48-year-old's bogey-free round, which ended in the gathering dusk, included nine birdies.
"I drove the ball extremely well," said the assistant pro from Midland Valley CC in Aiken, S.C. "That was one key. I was able to pick a line and trust it. Imissed only a couple of fairways all afternoon. The other big factor is that I putted much better than I did on Wednesday."
Even Carpenter, who turned pro only a year-and-a-half ago, expressed surprise at his current position after two rounds: "There's no way I would ever have expected this. Coming to Mexico, I was looking to shoot maybe 4- or 5-under eacy day, like I did in the first round."
Carpenter's rise in competitive golf is surprising in itself, considering that he left golf for 15 to 20 years to play a highly competitve level of league softball in Southeastern U.S. "I only played golf a couple of times a year during that span," he said. "But I think working on developing my bat speed through core fitness workouts ultimately added length and timing to my golf game."
Entering the final two "innings" of the tournament will prove whether Carpenter is a solid closer, but he's already earned the respect of his fellow competitors. The leader's confidence and momentum will make it challenging for others to close the gap. And his teammates, who are playing lights out (see next page in the 'Leader Board'), are doing more than their share to shoulder scoring responsibility in the team event.
